Proposal for an Earthcare Action Committee to implement the AYM Earthcare Statement by the Earthcare drafting group.
Yearly Meeting 2008 asked the Earthcare Statement drafting group to prepare a proposal for a working group to assist Friends in carrying the AYM 2008 Earthcare Statement into action.
1) We recommend the formation of an Earthcare Action Committee under the care of Yearly Meeting.
2) As it has not been possible to form a committee during AYM 2008 and to enable an early start, we recommend AYM appoints 4 Friends to organise an interim AYM Earthcare Action Network.
a) The Network would do preparatory work and their main goal would be to put a proposal for the formation of a committee, in consultation with Nominations Committee, to Standing Committee in 2008.
b) The Network would also identify people who have an interest and/or expertise in this area, to ensure all who wish to be involved can be.
c) We bring forward the names of Jane Growns, Adrian Glamorgan, Vidya, Jasmine Payget to act as the Network organisers.
3) Further, we recommend that Earthcare Correspondents should be appointed by each Regional and local Meeting, Young Friends, Quaker Service Australia, Quaker Peace and Legislation Committee, and Indigenous Concerns Committee.a) The Network organisers would liaise with and coordinate the Earthcare Correspondents.
4) We also ask that the YM Secretary distribute the Earthcare Statement to Quakers nationally and internationally (perhaps by putting it on our website and appending it to the YM 2008 epistle), the National Council of Churches Australia, the Climate Institute, church and other faith newspapers, Resurgence, Yes! and Utne Reader.The Earthcare Statement drafting group has prepared a Discussion Paper for information. We will offer it to the Network organisers to further develop and pass to the Committee in due course, to help initiate their work and considerations.
